Groceries & Supplies
For general
grocery needs, we recommend the Save Easy in Kensington – a
well stocked grocery store. For bread and desserts, we highly recommend
Mary’s Bakery in Kensington. Everything is delicious and her
pies are worth the trip to PEI alone. For fast and immediate requirements,
the General Store at Twin shores is good for very basic items (milk,
eggs etc.). Sometimes they also have great BBQ meats. They also have
a nice soft ice cream bar that the kids will enjoy, and pizza for
those days that you just don’t feel like cooking.
Eating Out
For good basic
home cooking and fresh off-the-boat seafood at a reasonable price,
we recommend the Hurricanez restaurant (right on #20, 2 minutes down
the road). This is the closest restaurant to our beach house.
If you turn left
on #20, about 10 minutes drive down the road, you will come to New
London. The restaurant here is also very good – a well varied
menu with great seafood and desserts.
About a 15 minute
drive on #20 in Stanley Bridge, Carr’s Restaurant is excellent
for lobster and seafood. With fresh seafood, a great oyster bar, this
is a reliably good mid-range place to eat.
For a high-end
dining experience or special occasions, we recommend the Dalvay (about
a 45 minute drive along the coast near Stanhope). This gracious and
beautiful old inn is set on a stunning waterside location and well
worth
the drive.
You will find brochures
with additional details at the cottage with maps and directions to
all attractions.
Pet Friendly
You will
find a dog dish, ball, and scoop bags in the front entrance. Given
the miles of beaches around the peninsula, there is lots of room for
dogs to run. We only ask that you keep pets off the furniture.
Entertainment
The house
has a flat screen TV with built-in DVD player. We recommend that you
bring a supply of movies with you for rainy days/evenings, or you
can pick these up at the Kensington Save Easy as well (selection is
not extensive here). You may also want to bring along any favorite
family games, books etc. depending on what your kids prefer.
Family Activity Recommendations
Our favorites:
deep sea fishing at the New London wharf (886-2647), golfing at the
Darnley Greens 9 hole course (walking distance – 836-4355),
and sea kayaking in Malpeque Bay (432-0111).
Cavendish features
a number of theme/fun parks such as Sandspit and the Shining Waters
Water Park. For Anne of Green Gables aficionados, many of the Anne-related
sites are within a 15-minute drive of the cottage.
For active families,
there are bicycle rental and hiking options. For arts and cultural
activities, Charlottetown is less than an hour’s drive and Summerside
is only 20 minutes away.
Recycling/Garbage
PEI has
very eco-friendly requirements for recycling and garbage. Bags are
provided for you to separate plastics, glass, and paper items. There
is a compost bin under the sink for leftover food items. For any questions,
let local care-takers, Kevin and Sherry Champion, know. Their phone
numbers are programmed into the cottage telephone.
